Where do the tax cliffs sit, and what happens to take-home pay as income rises?

Tax rates step up, the personal allowance is withdrawn between £100,000 and £125,140 (60% income tax on the way through, 62% with National Insurance), and Child Benefit is clawed back above £60,000. The next pound is not worth the same everywhere, and the headline rates do not show it.

Move the salary and see how much of each extra £1 is deducted. A single earner example. Child Benefit, partners, pensions, savings and the Budget changes are in the full tool. Rules for 2026/27. Nothing you move here leaves your device.

What you get

A cliff map for you, or each of you

See how much of every extra £1 you lose, from £0 to £200,000, with the Child Benefit charge, the £100,000 cliff and the 60% band marked.

What a pension payment would do at each cliff

The extra pension payment that would bring income back under a threshold, and what it would cost in take-home after tax relief.

What the Budget changed

Just you, or you and a partner

Use it for 1 person or 2. If there are 2 of you, it also shows how Marriage Allowance and different splits of savings interest and dividends change the numbers.

Bonus or pay rise check

Enter a bonus or a pay rise and see how much you would keep, which cliffs it carries you across, and what paying part of it into a pension would do to your take-home.

Who it is for

Individuals and couples in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, especially parents with an income around £60,000 to £125,000 who receive Child Benefit or use childcare support. It covers employment income, workplace pensions, savings interest, dividends, Gift Aid, student loans, Child Benefit, tax-free childcare and Marriage Allowance.

Not for Scottish taxpayers (Scotland has different income tax rates). Not covered: self-employment, rental income, benefits in kind, pension annual allowance tapering and the minimum-earnings tests for childcare support.

How accurate is it? It uses the UK tax rules published up to the date shown in the tool, checked against official sources and separate calculations. No calculator is 100% accurate, rules can change at a Budget, and results depend on the figures you enter. It is general information, not advice.
